St Philips Primary School

St Philips School was founded in 1846 as part of the National Society for Promoting Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church (known as the National Society)'s drive to establish elementary schools to educate the poor. It initially came under the local control of the parish of St Mark's in Widcombe. In 1867, it was handed over to the new parish of St Luke's, in South Lyncombe. The school was thus known as St Luke's school until the 1960s when it was transferred to the new parish of St Philip & St James, Odd Down, and hence changed its name to St Philips School.

About the early years of the school
